Call me Oscar… baby!

Call me Oscar… baby!

Meryl Streep, palying a real bad girl with Oscar in 2012!

The origins of the nickname "Oscar" are not clear, but they are surrounded by popularstories...

Maybe Margaret Herrick...
From 1931 to 1943 Margaret Herrick worked for the Academy as first librarian, until 1943 when she replaced her husband, becoming the Academy executive director. Today The Academy's extensive library in Beverly Hills is named in her honor. Maybe we have to thank her for naming Oscar The Oscar, saying that it "looked just like my Uncle Oscar".

Or maybe Bette Davis...
When she won her first Academy Award in 1935 she named the Statuette Oscar...

Maybe Sidney Skolsky...
"Officially named the Academy Award of Merit, the statuette is better known by its nickname, Oscar. While the origins of the moniker aren’t clear, a popular story has it that upon seeing the trophy for the first time, Academy librarian (and eventual executive director) Margaret Herrick remarked that it resembled her Uncle Oscar. The Academy didn’t adopt the nickname officially until 1939, but it was widely known enough by 1934 that Hollywood columnist Sidney Skolsky used it in a piece referring to Katharine Hepburn’s first Best Actress win." Stay tuned... Uncleoscar ;)
