The Funniest Girl ever is coming back! Barbra to sing @ the Oscars

The Funniest Girl ever is coming back! Barbra to sing @ the Oscars

Today's big news! Bab's @ the Oscars

A Record-Woman

We have to go back in 1977 to see Barbra Streisand singing at the Academy Award Ceremony. During that night, March 28, 1977 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion Barbra Straisand won her second Academy Award for Best Original Song with "Evergreen", from the movie A Star is Born.
She become the first woman winning an Oscar for Best Song as a composer, and she is also the only person  to win an Academy Award for both acting and songwriting.
She was the third woman winning an Oscar for Debut acting  in 1968 (Funny Girl), shared with Katharine Hepburn for The Lion in Winter.

She is a Top Selling Artist with more than 71.5 Million albums sold in the US and more than 140 Million albums sold worldwide.
Barbra Straisand, Frank Sinatra, Cher and Shirley Jones are the only four artists being awarded with an Oscar for Acting and also recording a number-one single in the US chart.

 "Funny Girl" 1968

 "Evergreen" 1977

This year on February 24th, after 36 years from her last appearance on the stage performing her song, we'll have the pleasure to see her up on the stage again during the 85th Annual Academy Award. It will probably be a tribute to movie musicals that will also include performances by Norah Jones and Adele performing Skyfall with all the actors that played the role of James Bond.

it will be a glorious night...

Spielberg/Williams: a Long-lasting Collaboration

Spielberg/Williams: a Long-lasting Collaboration

It will be useless to write the Never Ending list of Awards won by Spielberg in his glorious career. His remarkable work as a Director, Producer and Screenwriter started in early 70's, and just skyrocketing till today, thanks also to his friend and composer John Williams.
John Williams is the living person with the highest number of academy awards Nominations (48)

From The Sugarland Express in 1974, to Jaws in 1975, in just one year Spielberg started to knock on our door, and never stopped. In 1977 he Directed Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and he made money enough to save Coulmbia from Bankruptcy. Spielberg is still making money from a bet with his friend George Lucas, earning 2.5% from Star Wars, and Lucas earning the same percentage from Close Encounters.
He was the first bringing together on the big screen Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi in "1941", after their success in the Saturday Night Live.
In 1982 Spielberg created the most magical moment in cinema, thanks to E.T. and Elliott flight, in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial; that is now the symbol of Amblin Entertainment, an American film and television production company founded by Steven Spielberg, Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall.

From 1981 to 2008 the character of Indiana Jones, with his hat and bullwhip appeared on the screen in four amazing movies, becoming the Hero of the Pop culture in the 80's.

In 1993 Jurassic Park, based on Michael Crichton best seller, become the highest-grossing film produced and directed by Spielberg.
For Shindler's List and Save Private Ryan respectively filmed in 1993 and 1997, Spielberg won the Academy Award for Best Director and for Shindler's List also the Academy award for Best Picture.
The Spielberg-Williams Collaboration started in 1974 and, with Lincoln filmed in 2012, the 25th movie together with Spielberg as Director,  they have created one of the most creative and influential artistic collaborations in film history.

Am I just a Cameo?

Am I just a Cameo?

Alfred Hitchcock in The Birds

Yeah, but what's exactly a Cameo?
Originally, a cameo-role was a famous person playing himself in a movie. It could be a very short appearance (few seconds), or a bit longer (few minutes).

Sean Connery as King Richard in “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves”

Nowadays the Cameo is becoming more and more important, is like a signature, a kind of "hey I was there"!!!
A cameo-role could be quickly recognizable to emphasize a particular moment in the movie, or hidden on purpose, so the funniest is for the director to try to hide important personalities with make up, wings or mustaches, the harder is to find it for the public.
One of the greatest examples of Cameos in a movie is Around the World in Eighty Days (1956). Director Mike Todd' vision was to introduce more than 40 famous performers in his movies, for which he won the Academy Award  in 1957. Some of the most remarkable cameos are those of Marlene Dietrich, Frank Sinatra, José Greco and Buster Keaton, and some of them are also presented at the end of the movie.

For sure the most famous cameos in movie history are those of Alfred Hitchcock, but other Directors like Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese, Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg love to take part in their movies.
Quentin Tarantino in Django Unchained

Others like John Landis in The Blues Brothers chooses personalities and friends as an enrichment. In Blues Brothers, Director Frank Oz is seen at the very beginning of the movie while he's checking out John Belushi from the Prison, and also Spielberg had a little part in the Movie.

There are also writers and singers who love cameos! An example could be Stan Lee, the father of many great Marvel characters. Stan Lee appeared in Captain America, Iron Man (2), Hulk, The Avengers, Thor, X-Men, Fantastic Four and Spider Man.

And here come the Answer of yesterday's post...

Guess Who...

That's Martin Scorsese in Taxi Driver...

The Mexican Standoff

The Mexican Standoff

The Everybody vs everybody philosophy

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (1966) Sergio Leone

The first Mexican Standoff in Motion Pictures History. Soundtrack by Ennio Morricone

The Mexican Standoff, differs from a duel, in fact the subject that goes first is in disadvantage. When we have three subjects no one is safe. So with three entities in conflict with each other is difficult to get out of a situation.

I'm sure you remember this scene from Pulp Fiction. Well that's another perfect exemple of a Mexican Standoff in Movies. No one is safe!
Imagine Honey Bunny shooting Jules Winnfield, the reaction to that could be Vincent shooting Honey Bunny, and maybe also Pumpkin. But here we have Vince and Jules stand together.

So can you think other movies where you can find the Mexican Satndoff? I had mine...
N'joy

Christoph Waltz, Oscar Acceptance Speech 2010

After a Golden Globe... also an Oscar for Inglorious Basterds. After a Golden Globe... well we have to wait, but that's Christoph Waltz... jumping in his golden era!
"... and Quentin, with his unorthodox methods of navigation, this fearless explorer, took this ship across and brought it in with flying colors and that’s why I’m here. And this is your welcoming embrace and there’s no way I can ever thank you enough, but I can start right now. Thank you." (Oscar for Inglorious Basterds).
Mr Waltz's speech finished with a big and... superlative thank you to his Director Quentin Tarantino a couple of years ago.
So the story repeats itself... same Director, same "unorthodox methods of navigation", same actor and same category, Actor in a Supporting Role. He has already in his hands the second Golden Globe, that he has won last week at the Golden Globe Awards (at the Beverly Hilton Hotel).
Now we are waiting for the 24th of February! Uncleoscar congratulates Mr Waltz for his performance! We'll see who will go home with the oscar this year.

Cecil B. DeMille Award: Jodie Foster - Golden Globe Awards - The Speech

Cecil B. DeMille Award: Jodie Foster - Golden Globe Awards - The Speech

jodie foster globes 660 reuters.JPG

It comes a moment in a lifetime when you want to talk, but not just talk, express your inner voices... It comes a moment in a lifetime when you have reached the conciousness of what life is and what that means for you. If you have six minutes of your life to... let's just say "waste" in a smart way, listen to Jodie's speech. It's not about coming out or not, personally I don't mind about that, but it's the love and the sensibility that are so proudly expressed that makes me honored to hear. It's not just to say thank you as everyone did yesterday night, it's something that goes beyond.
I give you Mrs Jodie Foster...
